We at Birkbeck, University of London, are pleased to announce an opening for a Lecturer in Law. Birkbeck Law School forms part of Birkbeck’s Business and Law Faculty and is an internationally respected centre for world class legal teaching and research.

We are looking for an exceptional Lecturer (Teaching & Education) to join the School this Autumn term, on a part-time, permanent contract. We would especially welcome a Lecturer with strong student counselling skills, as enhanced pastoral care duties for first year students is part of the role. 

As a Lecturer in Law, you will be;

  • Teaching across any of the 7 Foundations of Legal Knowledge, as well as further contributing to programme curriculum.
  • Using listening, interpersonal and pastoral care skills to deal with sensitive issues concerning students, being responsible for the pastoral care and support of students within a specified area.
  • Acting as a mentor for students in the capacity of personal tutor, giving first line support; and referring students to alternative sources and services for further help.
  • Employing innovations in teaching and learning, to meet the learning needs of students, through the development of teaching materials, forms of pedagogy, or appropriate teaching collaborations.
  • Undertaking and developing administrative and management roles and responsibilities within the School, (e.g. Exams Officer, Admissions Tutor) as agreed with the Head of School.
  • Maintaining up to date expertise in relevant subject areas.
  • Advancing knowledge in an appropriate way (which may include presentations, or publications relating to the practice of teaching and learning.)

 As a Lecturer in Law, you will need to have;

  • Teaching experience at degree or postgraduate level, preferably within Higher Education or similar
  • An understanding of different teaching and learning methods and experience of working with students from a range of backgrounds
  • An ability to lecture and conduct seminars clearly and effectively, with the assistance of a mentor if required, whilst on Academic Probation
  • Organisation and administration skills
  • Interpersonal skills to relate well to students, especially mature students.

In addition the following would be useful but is not essential;

  • Experience in professional legal practice, and expertise in Private Law subjects desirable.

Remuneration

£21,182 rising to £29,277 per annum (actual), (0.5 pro-rated £42,365 - £58,554, FTE) The salary is on the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.
