An exciting opportunity to contribute to expanding Birkbeck’s teaching and research in the field of astrobiology.

Based within the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, you will contribute to teaching and research in the field of astrobiology. You will have a strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and will teach astrobiology and planetary science modules within the framework of Birkbeck’s B.Sc. Degrees in ‘Planetary Science with Astronomy’ and ‘Planetary Science, Space Exploration and Astrobiology’. You will also play a major role in establishing a new M.Sc. programme in Astrobiology and contribute to the teaching of this programme. On the research side, you will have the opportunity to develop your own research programme in the area of astrobiology, and will have opportunities to apply for external funding through the Department’s STFC Planetary Science Consolidated Grant, the UK Space Agency, and other external funding bodies.

You will have a PhD in astrobiology, planetary science, or a related discipline, and will have demonstrated research experience in astrobiology as illustrated by appropriate peer-reviewed publications. Astrobiology is a highly interdisciplinary subject and applicants with research experience in any aspect of astrobiology (including, but not limited to, astrophysics, geomicrobiology, biomarkers, planetary and exo-planetary habitability, planetary exploration, etc) will be considered, but evidence of interdisciplinary research across two or more of these disciplines with a focus on searching for life in the universe will be an advantage. You will also be passionate about teaching astrobiology and related topics, and ideally will have experience of university teaching at undergraduate level.
