Are you passionate about electron microscopy and high-resolution imaging? Join Birkbeck, University of London, as an Electron Microscopy Facility Specialist and External Research Coordinator.

Our institution is renowned for its cutting-edge research and collaborative environment, and we are looking for a dedicated cryo-electron microscopist professional to help run our state-of-the-art ISMB Electron Microscopy Facility.

As an Electron Microscopy Facility High Resolution Specialist and External Research Coordinator, you will:

  • Oversee the daily operations of the ISMB Electron Microscopy Facility, ensuring high-resolution data collection and efficient sample preparation.
  • Develop and support high-resolution imaging research projects, including both internal and external collaborations.
  • Support the research of the ISMB Facility user community and you'll be able to develop your own research projects
  • Develop and support research projects from external Facility users, and coordinate use of and reporting to the National EM Centre at the Diamond Synchrotron. 
  • Work with Integrative Imaging and Training Coordinator, and with EM Research Computing computing colleagues to manage data systems and outputs.
  • Supervise early career researchers and PhD students using the facility.

We are looking for an Electron Microscopy Facility High Resolution Specialist and External Research Coordinator who has:

  • Extensive knowledge of EM high-resolution imaging experiments.
  • Practical experience in cryo-EM and tomography reconstruction workflows.
  • Proficiency in preparing diverse EM samples and data analysis.
  • Strong computational skills with EM and high-resolution data hardware and software systems.

This opportunity would build on postdoctoral research experience primarily in single particle cryo-electron microscopy structure determination.

Salary and benefits:

£49,745 rising to £58,554 per annum, Grade 8 of the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance that applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London area.

Contract:

Open-ended, permanent contract. Full-time (35 hours a week), with occasional out of hours working. Work is based at our Bloomsbury campus, and will involve occasional trips to the National EM Centre, at the Diamond Synchrotron.
