The Role

As the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Knowledge Exchange and Innovation), you will be responsible for:

  • Develop and implement Birkbeck's long-term research strategy.
  • Maximise research performance and oversee high-quality submissions for the REF.
  • Provide leadership and direction for Birkbeck researchers, staff, and students.
  • Ensure the highest standards of research governance and integrity.
  • Oversee commercialisation and impact generation of research.
  • Support faculty Heads in developing research activities with significant economic impact.
  • Lead the implementation of the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF).
  • Chair the College’s Innovation and Commercialisation Board.
  • Manage all staff within the research, innovation, and knowledge exchange functions.

The Candidate

To thrive as our Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Knowledge Exchange and Innovation), you should possess:

  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic planning, budget management, and project planning.
  • A proven track record of securing funding and identifying future funding sources.
  • A thorough understanding of compliance and regulatory requirements in a university setting.
  • Significant senior management experience in higher education.
  • Experience of managing a Research Selectivity or Research Audit Exercise.
  • A successful record of developing international research networks and partnerships.
  • Proven leadership experience in inspiring staff and achieving high performance standards.
  • A Professor title or a CV that meets the Professorial level standards of Birkbeck and the University of London.

The Package

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Knowledge Exchange and Innovation) will receive a competitive salary on Grade 10 of the College’s London pay scale. This role offers a full-time schedule of 35 hours per week, with a hybrid working model. The initial appointment is for a 5-year term, which may be renewable, and includes an open-ended, ongoing professorial role at Birkbeck, post competition of the initial 5-year term. Additional benefits include a consolidated weighting/allowance for staff based in Greater London.
