Demonstrator - Understanding Research Methods for Psychology

Birkbeck, University of London, has an excellent opportunity for a Demonstrator to join the teaching team on the Certificate of Higher Education, BSc Foundation Year and BA Programmes, and support the School of Psychological Sciences this Autumn 2026. 

• Understanding Research Methods for Psychology, Level 4
• 41 hours of demonstrating
• Tuesday afternoon 2-5pm, or evening 6-9pm, plus Saturday afternoons. (Please indicate your preference of daytime or evening during the application form or interview).

You will assist in the delivery of predetermined programmes of teaching to Birkbeck Psychological Science students, under academic supervision, to facilitate the successful completion of their studies.  You should engage in the scholarship necessary to ensure good practice in teaching and to apply appropriate levels of knowledge in the subject areas to be taught. 

Most individuals undertaking these roles will be employed as part of their general academic development to obtain practical teaching experience and will be undertaking this work independently but in parallel with postgraduate studies.  

In addition to the criteria specified in the job pack, candidates must have: 

• A first degree in Psychology or an equivalent relevant qualification.    
• Advanced experience in using a range of statistical techniques and report writing suitable for quantitative psychological science research. 
• Awareness of the needs of part-time adult learners and ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and inspire them to learn.  
• Confident presentation skills and ability to clearly and effectively pass on specialist subject area knowledge.      
• A good working knowledge of SPSS. 
• Experience of marking coursework and/or exams.  
• A good level of IT and Communication Technology skills particularly in application to standard packages (eg Word, Excel, e-mail, internet usage).

Salary:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £24.55 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, and other examining duties in connection with the course. 

Contract:
