Birkbeck, University of London, has an opportunity for an Associate Tutor to join the teaching team and support its Business School this coming Autumn 2026.

We are seeking an Associate Tutor for the following module:

  • SC07007Z5 Preparing for Work
  • Teaching 1.5 hours per week for 9 weeks
  • Autumn Term, Wednesdays, 1930-2100
  • Autumn Term teaching starts w/c 5 October 2026

You will have knowledge of academic writing and research skills (e.g., literature research, argument development, essay writing, critical thinking and discussion) and experience of teaching and supporting students in relevant courses and be qualified to the corresponding level of the award as required to teach (or demonstrate equivalent professional/industry level experience).

As Associate Tutor, you will play a key role in supporting students preparation for entry into a work placement. You will teach on the Preparing for Work module, which will equip students with the self awareness, market knowledge, application skills and preparedness to enter into a work placement.

You will guide students through a series of reflective tasks, practical preparation and role play exercises in order to build their confidence and develop a practical portfolio of materials including CV and question responses.

You will bring proven experience of supporting undergraduate students or early career professionals in a Career Coaching or Career Guidance capacity, ideally with a supporting qualification.  You will be confident in designing and delivering learning activities, managing student anxiety and delivering balanced and constructive feedback on both oral and written student work.

You will have at least a degree in Career Coaching or Career Guidance or an equivalent qualification, preferably at a Masters level. Please refer to the person specification for further selection criteria.

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College, starting rate £61.39 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay, for contact hours worked.

This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
