Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking an Associate Tutor to join the teaching team and support the School of Historical Studies this coming Autumn 2026. 

We have two opportunities for the following modules:

  • The Ethics of Technology and Artificial Intelligence (term 1, Wednesdays 2-5pm and 6-9pm)
  • Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence: Minds, Machines and Meaning (term 1, Thursdays 2-5pm and 6-9pm)

You are asked to indicate on your application which modules(s) you are interested in applying for and your qualifications and skills to undertake them. Please also indicate any scheduling constraints, including terms, days and times.

Each module involves 30 hours of seminar teaching (90 minutes per seminar x 10 weeks). Additionally post holders will be expected to attend lectures (either daytime or evening).

The seminar groups meet once a week after lectures. Lectures are 2-3.30pm and 6-7.30pm, with seminars 3.30-5pm and 7.30-9pm.

As Associate Tutor, you will have knowledge and experience of teaching philosophy and be qualified to the corresponding level of the award as required to teach (or demonstrate equivalent professional/industry level experience).

This teaching work is contingent upon on the module or group recruiting sufficient student numbers to run.

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College, starting rate £61.39 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay, for contact hours worked.

This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
