Birkbeck, University of London, has an opportunity for an Associate Tutor in Politics to join the teaching team and support its School of Social Sciences this coming academic year 2026.

We are seeking an Associate Tutor to teach on the following modules:

1. Foundations of Social and Political Science (undergraduate level four) 5 October to 24 March 2027

Mondays in terms one and two, either 2-3.30pm or 6-7.30pm (to be decided once student numbers are known). The module is offered as part of the Choose Your Own Timetable scheme, where students can select if they wish to study in the day or evening.

You will have knowledge of the key concepts, theories, and methods employed in contemporary social and political science and experience of teaching these to undergraduate students on social or political science courses.

2. Transformations in Modern Politics: Democracy, Conflict and Globalisation (undergraduate level four) 6 October to 15 December 2026

Tuesdays in term one, either 2-5pm or 6-9pm (to be decided once student numbers are known). The module is offered as part of the Choose Your Own Timetable scheme, where students can select if they wish to study in the day or evening.

You will have knowledge of democracy theory, political sociology, and globalisation and experience of teaching in these areas.

3. Global Politics, Governance and Security (postgraduate) 8 October to 17 December 2026

Thursdays in term one, 6-9pm. You will have knowledge of global security and governance and experience of teaching international politics, broadly conceived and experience of teaching in these areas.

Candidates must be qualified to the corresponding level of the award as required to teach (or demonstrate equivalent professional/industry level experience). Please indicate when applying which module/s you are interested in teaching.

Please note this teaching work is contingent upon on the module or seminar group recruiting sufficient student numbers to run.

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College, starting rate £61.39 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay, for contact hours worked.

This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 6 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
