Associate Lecturer - Introduction to Social Psychology

We have an excellent opportunity for an Associate Lecturer for the following module:

• SCPS176H4 Introduction to Social Psychology and level 4
• Thursday afternoons 2-5pm and evenings 6-9pm, Term 2
• 30 hours of teaching.

You will have knowledge of contemporary social psychology and experience of lecturing to groups of up to 100 students and be qualified to the corresponding level of the award as required to teach (or demonstrate equivalent professional/industry level experience).

Our Introduction to Social Psychology module at Level 4 introduces students to the scientific investigation of how  thoughts, feelings and behaviour of individuals are influenced by the actual, imagined or implied presence of others. Key topics that are covered, include:

• First impressions from faces
• Attribution & Social explanation
• Persuasion
• Conformity & Obedience
• Leadership & Group decision making
• Prejudice & Discrimination
• Aggression
• Prosocial Behaviour
• Language & Communication
• Culture

The course aims to provide students with a broad introduction to the discipline of social psychology, including methodological approaches, issues and debates in the field. Students will be taught critical thinking and through lectures, as well as assessments, they will apply this learning to evaluate research findings and theory in order to develop a reasoned, flexible position in the face of complex, potentially conflicting information.

As an Associate Lecturer, you will be working closely with the other Associate Lecturer to organise, deliver and assess the module. Comprehensive materials for all lectures will be provided.

The module requires 10 teaching sessions, 3 hours each. These will be delivered on Thursday either afternoon 2pm to 5 pm or evening 6 pm to 9 pm during the Spring term (January to March) according to a pre-defined teaching schedule (teaching is shared between the two Associate Lecturers). 

In addition to the criteria specified in the job pack, the minimum requirements for selection are listed below:  

• A degree in Psychology.     
• Pursuing or completed a PhD in Psychology or related area.   
• Relevant teaching experience, working with adult students within the HE sector.  
• A good understanding of the needs of full and part-time adult learners and be able to relate well to their individual needs and engage their interest and enthusiasm.   
• Experience of (or willingness to develop) a wide range of teaching and assessment methods.    
• Demonstrably effective communication, interpersonal and presentation skills across a range of relevant contexts.  
• A working knowledge of IT including Word, Excel, e-mail and experience of (or willingness to use) Moodle & Teams.   
• Particularly able to work both as part of a team and independently as appropriate.   
• Willing to engage in reflective practice.

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
