The School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at Birkbeck, University of London, is looking for an Associate Lecturer to deliver the module Mobile Computing next year in 2025. 

For more details of the module level, aims and syllabus and the teaching approach taken please refer to the overview description via Mobile Computing — Birkbeck, University of London (bbk.ac.uk). To be successful, you will have excellent knowledge of the module content at the required level.

Teaching material will be made available to the successful candidate. The role involves delivering in person teaching sessions and setting and marking of assessments. The role may also involve generating pre-recorded videos and other teaching materials.

You should have a first degree in computer science, data science, mathematics or statistics or in a directly related subject.

Further to the person specification, essential requirements for this role are: 

  • experience of a wide range of teaching and assessment methods;    
  • demonstrably effective communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, across a range of relevant contexts and platforms;  
  • a working knowledge of digital education technology including, Moodle, Panopto, Teams, Office 365 and technologies specifically relating to the subject matter of the module;       
  • willingness to engage within a HyFlex learning environment with elements of both in-person teaching and online materials; 
  • ability to work as part of a team and independently, and willingness to engage in reflective practice.   

 Desirable qualifications for this role include: 

  • a postgraduate degree in a related subject; 
  • relevant teaching experience, working with adult students within the HE sector;  
  • a good understanding of the needs of part-time adult learners and be able to relate well to their individual needs and engage their interest and enthusiasm.

Salary and benefits

Payment is based on an hourly rate for contact hours worked. The specific rate depends on length of continuous service with the College and includes of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay. This hourly rate of £66.70 per hour is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract

Part-time, 3 month fixed-term contract April-June 2025. Teaching Tuesday evening 6-9pm. Closing date: 17 November 2024. Interview date: 27 November 2024.
