Birkbeck, University of London, is seeking an Associate Lecturer to join the teaching team and support the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences this Autumn 2026. 

We have an opportunity for an Associate Lecturer for our Data Structures and Algorithms module. You will contribute to teaching and supporting students in theory and practice of data structures and algorithms.

The teaching is both face-to-face in our classrooms in central London, and online via live video conferencing that is simultaneous with face-to-face teaching. The videos are archived and can be accessed by students at a later date.

You will have excellent knowledge of the module topics and of Python as the programming language used for the practical aspects of the module. Previous teaching experience in data structures and algorithms or related topics is desirable.

You should be able to support students in both theoretical and hands-on practical activities, including execution of algorithms with pen and paper, programming, design of data structures, and algorithm design and analysis.

Further essential requirements for this role are:

  • Strong practical programming skills in Python
  • Excellent knowledge in the theory of data structures and algorithms
  • Ability to support practical programming activities
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College, starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay, for contact hours worked.

This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract
