Do you have an interest in teaching the key principles of psychodynamic counselling and psychotherapy? Birkbeck, University of London, has an excellent opportunity for an Associate Lecturer to join the Birkbeck Counselling Centre.

As Associate Lecturer you will teach the following programmes and modules. Your main task will be the preparation, teaching, administration, and assessment of modules. Classes meet weekly from January until December 2025:

1. MSc Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy (Jan start)
Weekly classes Saturdays daytime from 11 January until December (no teaching during Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays). Teaching is for 30 weeks unless otherwise indicated.
Y3 Theory - Saturdays - 09.30-10.45am.

2. Graduate Certificate Foundation for Counselling and Psychotherapy Training
Weekly classes on Saturday daytime from 11 January until December (no teaching during Easter, Summer and Christmas holidays). Teaching is for 30 weeks unless otherwise indicated.
Grad Cert - Saturdays - 10am-1pm (with a 15-minute break is 2.75hours a week).

3. Module: Working in Caring Environments (Jan start)
A new 10 week elective module for Health and Social care students commencing Thursday 16 January until Thursday 27 March, which allows for Reading Week.
Thursdays 6-9pm (with a 15-minute break is 2.75hours a week). This runs for 10 weeks only.

You will be a psychodynamic counsellor or psychotherapist, or a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, trained to masters level or equivalent, with substantial, post-qualification clinical experience, some of which will ideally be in a public setting. You will have experience of different types of teaching methods and strategies appropriate to counselling/psychotherapy (in particular, both experiential and critical teaching methods).

Further to the person specification, essential requirements for this role are:

• A clinical qualification in psychodynamic counselling, psychodynamic psychotherapy, or psychoanalytic psychotherapy
• A current clinical practice and substantial, post-qualification clinical experience, some of which will ideally be in a public setting
• Teaching experience appropriate to the level of the course you are applying to teach.

Remuneration

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £68.13 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5 which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course. 

Contract

Part-time, 12 month, fixed-term contract. Closing date: Sunday 24 November 2024. Interview date: early December 2024.
