The School of Historical Studies at Birkbeck, University of London aims to recruit an Associate Lecturer to teach on our undergraduate Archaeology programme. The module details are:
- Beginnings - The Archaeology of the Prehistory
- 30 hours
- Wednesdays, 6-9pm January to March 2027
You should have good knowledge of the archaeology of prehistory from the Palaeolithic to Late Bronze Age (including origins of the concept of prehistory and its environmental background; early hominins; modern humans; Upper Palaeolithic with a focus on Europe; Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze settlement patterns with a focus on Britain, and deposition in later prehistory), and of historiographical and theoretical debates in the study of prehistory, and have completed a PhD. Some experience teaching a diverse group of students at undergraduate level is also essential.
Your role will be to deliver teaching to Birkbeck students, in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully, and to undertake all related course administrative duties as required, including supervising selection of essay topic, and marking presentations and essays.
Further to the person specification, additional essential requirements for this role are:
- A PhD (or equivalent) in an appropriate specialism.
- Teaching experience at undergraduate level.
- A good developing track record of research in the field.
- A good understanding of different teaching and learning methods, and experience in working with students from a range of backgrounds.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, as well as good administrative skills.

Remuneration
Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5 which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
