Associate Lecturer A - Understanding Applied Social Psychology

We have an excellent opportunity for an Associate Lecturer to join the teaching team on the Certificate of Higher Education, Foundation Year and BA Programmes for the following module:

• Understanding Applied Social Psychology, Level 4
• 22 hours of teaching, 11 weeks from January to March 2027
• Monday afternoons 2-4pm or evenings 6-8pm (Please indicate your availability and preference in your application form).

Your role will be to deliver teaching to Birkbeck students, in order to enable them to complete their studies successfully and undertake all related course administrative duties as required. Your main responsibility will be preparation, teaching, administration and assessment of the Understanding Applied Social Psychology module, which is a Level 4 module offered as part of our Certificate of Higher Education, Foundation Year and BA programmes.

The module offers an introduction to the main perspectives and theories that seek to explain social behaviour and interaction, including exploring a range of perspectives and models can be used to explain various aspects of social behaviour such as attitudes, group behaviour, communication and media, with a focus on applying these theories to understanding contemporary social structures and situations. This will serve as the foundation for more detailed exploration of these topic later in their degree.

In addition to the criteria specified in the job pack, the minimum requirements for selection are listed below: 

• A degree in Psychology.   
• Pursuing or completed a PhD in Psychology or related area.  
• Relevant teaching experience, working with adult students within the HE sector.
• A good understanding of the needs of full and part-time adult learners and be able to relate well to their individual needs and engage their interest and enthusiasm. 
• Experience of (or willingness to develop) a wide range of teaching and assessment methods.  
• Demonstrably effective communication, interpersonal and presentation skills across a range of relevant contexts.
• A working knowledge of IT including Word, Excel, e-mail and experience of (or willingness to use) Moodle & Teams.     
• Particularly able to work both as part of a team and independently as appropriate. 
• Willing to engage in reflective practice.

 Desirable:

• A teaching qualification

The successful candidate will be required to teach all sessions on the module.

Renumeration

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
