Are you keen to teach Geographic Data Science to undergraduate and postgraduate students at Birkbeck?

We are looking to appoint an Associate Lecturer in Geographic Data Science, who has sound knowledge of GIS, Geographic Data Science, GIS Programming, geo-visualisation, and database management of geospatial data. On successful appointment of this job, you will contribute to the teaching of “Introduction to Spatial Thinking” (BSc Geography), “Introduction to Geographic Data Science” and “Programming for Geospatial Science and Visualisation” (MSc Geographic Data Science) modules. In each module, you will deliver lectures, help students work on practical exercises, assess the learning outcomes and also engage with the pastoral care of students. You will also have the opportunities to co-teach and co-design modules with other staff members in the department. 

In order to be successful in this role, you are expected to have

  • Sufficient educational background (a masters degree or equivalent) in GIS or cognate disciplines (e.g. Computer Science or Quantitative Geography).
  • Sound knowledge in GIS, big data management, programming in GIS, geo-visualisation.
  • Ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students and the passion to inspire their learning experience.

It is desirable that you have:

  • a PhD degree (or equivalent) in GIS or cognate disciplines (e.g. Computer Science or Quantitative Geography).
  • Experience in teaching at the undergraduate and/or the postgraduate level.
  • Experience in designing, co-ordinating and assessing modules in relevant subjects.

Remuneration:

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £60.78 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked. This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
