Join Birkbeck University as an Assistant Librarian Content Manager and play a pivotal role in managing our Content team. Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Making newly acquired material (paid for and free) available to users, ensuring access on the library catalogue and website is kept updated and is an accurate reflection of our holdings and material available.
  • Act as the library’s representative for national organisations in the field of acquisition and metadata, and the main point of contact for external suppliers.
  • Be responsible for the management of the cataloguing (downloading) of newly acquired material (in all formats) and the retrospective cataloguing of existing library material. As well as managing the processing of material to make it shelf-ready, monitoring, recording, and dealing with expenditure related to collection development.
  • Lead the Content team of staff daily, and take a proactive approach to service development.
  • Advise on matters relating to the library’s catalogue, collections and finance, and be responsible for the content and layout of the library’s online catalogue.

We are looking for an Assistant Librarian Content Manager who has:

  • Extensive experience in an academic library in a professional role.
  • In-depth knowledge of cataloguing, including AACR2, MARC, LCSH, and Dewey.
  • Experience with electronic resources and automated library systems.
  • Experience in financial management and budget monitoring.
  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of work and attention to detail.

The Content and Delivery Team is responsible for the acquisition of all library resources (print, digital, other media, lending from other libraries), and making these accessible (physical and digital) and discoverable for Birkbeck library users through the various search routes.

Salary and benefits

£37,143 rising to £42,365 per annum which is Grade 6 of the College's London Pay Scale. The salary quoted is on the College's London Pay Scale which includes a consolidated Weighting/Allowance which applies only to staff whose normal contractual place of work is in the London.
